Monumental art and protection of monuments as an instrument for national identity formation

The place and role of monumental art and protection of monuments in the national identity formation are determined in the article. The evolution of monumental art in the historical and contemporary context is studied. The characteristics of monumental art as the political symbolic are defined. It shows that monuments and memorials have always been considered as a propaganda tool of the ruling political system ideas. The main factors for their enormous potential influence on the collective conscious are outlined. The important role of protection of monuments in the public policy of identity is emphasized
